Artist Statement:

The title Statera, derived from the Latin word for “balance,” symbolizes the central themes of equilibrium. It represents harmony between humankind and nature, as well as the broader ecosystems that sustain life. The term also evokes the classical concept of the golden mean, suggesting an ideal state of balance between humanity and the natural world.

Rooted in Aristotelian philosophy, balance is the key to virtue. For example, courage is a virtue, but if taken to excess, it becomes recklessness; in deficiency, it leads to cowardice. In the sculpture, balance is explored through the example of the near-extinct Botha’s Lark. This small South African grassland bird has been severely impacted by agricultural development, over-grazing, forestry, and the mining industry.

Statera encourages reflection on how human action has disrupted the natural balance, and what kinds of solutions for environmental conservation, policy changes, and even cultural shifts are needed for sustainability.

Ultimately, the extinction warning of the Botha’s Lark invites a reconsideration of how progress is defined in modern society and how such definitions re-evaluate our relationships with the environment.
