Faye Spencer (B 1974)

I am an artist and educator based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, working in painting, drawing, and printmaking. My creative drive stems from a search for solace and a response to a sense of dislocation. I view artmaking as a reconciliatory process—a deliberate act of reorienting myself toward what truly matters. Works rooted in this impulse centre on the natural world and the domestic realm, upholding what is precious in it and easily overlooked. While these pieces may appear light or their subjects quiet, they preserve what I fear is being eroded.

When I am not in my studio, I teach students drawing, printmaking, and painting. Teaching is entirely integral to my artistic life; I find the dialogue set up in class and studio groups rewarding, probing and regenerative.
