Toni Bico is a Johannesburg-based contemporary artist with a bold style that moves between figurative and abstract to conceptual.

As an artist, Toni’s approach is one of discovery and an exploration of materials. Starting with a figure, the work is deconstructed to become more abstract. The effect is to strip the representation away and to enhance the essence or feeling that is inherent in the painting. Line, colour and formal elements of the painting become more important in experiencing the work. It is this artist’s wish never to be didactic but to engage you, the viewer, in a dialogue with the painting. Your experience of the work, gives meaning to the painting.

Born in Quelimane, Mozambique, Toni moved to Johannesburg, South Africa where he spent his formative years. He went on to study English Literature, Psychology and History of Art at varsity. As a reflection of a curious mind and his love of science, Toni has completed courses as diverse as Astronomy and Self Driving Vehicle Coding.

Toni’s works are found in collections across the globe including South Africa, France, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, Portugal, Singapore, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States.
