Trevor Coleman was born in 1936 in Johannesburg, and has exhibited extensively throughout the world and Johannesburg. Coleman’s work is best recognised because of his garish and bright use of colour, which he infuses with memories of his travels all around the world. Coleman visits a different country every year and spends time observing and absorbing the textures, shapes, which is evident in the formal nature of his artworks.

His travels include countries like Asia and, Africa, to places like Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia and Zanzibar. His works are reminiscent of an African colour palette and aesthetic; Coleman’s work explores vibrant colouring with a combination of geometric and abstract shapes. The abstracted nature of the work allows a different interpretation of the mundane and every day. He captures the essence of images and atmosphere using combinations of pure, bold colour and abstracted figures.
