Norman Catherine was born in East London, South Africa in September 1949. Catherine was educated at the Technical School of Art, in East London where he held his first show, in 1969. He has had 25 solo exhibitions and his work is displayed in numerous public and private collections, both locally and internationally. This exhibition consisted of different mediums from oil paintings on wood, bone, wire and an assortment of found objects. Soon after this show he began his career as a commercial artist in Johannesburg.
Catherine’s work has spanned to both sculptural and two dimensional, as both a sculptor and painter. This has given his work a broad interpretative quality. Catherine works in a wide range of media, from oil, acrylic, watercolour, and airbrush; as well as wood, fiber glass, wire, and metal. Catherine’s artwork has undergone several formal changes, spanning over his 40 year long career. Catherine’s visual trademarks have included rough-edged comical and nightmarish forms, rendered in brash cartoon colours.
