David Ballam was born in 1978 in Johannesburg. He first attended university in Cape Town but later moved to Rhodes University in the Eastern Cape. He was introduced to the camera by his professor and renowned photographer Obie Oberholzer. In 2004 attained his Fine Art honors degree majoring in photography. After graduating Ballam returned to Johannesburg where he worked for a number of years in commercial photography. Even though Ballam enjoyed working in commercial photography, he decided to return to his fine art roots where he could produce his own bodies of work. Ballam’s current trajectory focuses on taking any opportunity to travel and explore the space and landscape of Southern Africa, finding and creating images that transcend the subject matter into fine art photography.
