Robert Hodgins was born on 27 June 1920, in Dulwich, London and passed away in March of 2010. In 1938, he immigrated to South Africa. He joined the Union Defense Force and served in the Second World War in 1940, he returned to England, after the end of the war in 1945.

Hodgins studied at the Goldsmith’s College of`Art, University of London and obtained an Arts and Crafts Certificate, and in 1953 a National Diploma of Design, the equivalent a major in painting. Hodgins returned to South Africa in 1954 where he taught at a number of institutions such as the Pretoria Technical College and the Department of Fine Art of the University of the Witwatersrand from 1966 to 1983. He began to paint on a fulltime basis from there on. He worked in oil, acrylic, tempera and in various graphic media. While his works often depicted the human form is the subject matter, it is colour, and space and placing that play an important role in the works. Hodgins has exhibited extensively in South Africa, London, France, the United States and Netherlands for over six decades.
